May Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev Rest in Peace. He Was the Anti-Biden

When I heard that he’d died, I found my eyes welling with tears. I realized that Mikhail Gorbachev had made an enormous difference to my life, to all of our lives. He enriched them immeasurably, at the cost of ruining his own. “Greater love hath no man,” I thought, and said a quick, fervent prayer for his soul.
Here was a man who grew up in the heart of the godless, authoritarian Soviet system, and rose to its top. Who believed in the ideals which it had taught him, even as his family had suffered under Stalin. He survived the viciously Machiavellian world of Soviet politics, and rose to supreme power over one of the world’s two superpowers.
But once he held that power, unlike each of his predecessors, Gorbachev didn’t spend his time and energy clinging to it for its own sake. (Rent the black comedy The Death of Stalin for a truthful, satirical look at the internal hatreds and rivalries that plagued the Soviet system.) Nor did he grasp at the power his nation wielded to dominate others, throughout eastern Europe and much of the Third World.
Imagining a Humane Socialism. Of Course it Proved Imaginary
Instead, Mikhail Gorbachev looked honestly at the poisonous effects that Marxist socialism was having on his Russian homeland, and the satellite states it commanded. He saw the vast economic irrationalities, the deep corruption, the paranoid fear of openness and new ideas. And he believed he could change things, could return the vast socialist empire to the humanistic ideals that lay so deeply buried at its origins.
Gorbachev read the Utopian poetry of the young Marx and sought to recover that vision and make it real. He dismantled much of the apparatus of oppression that held the Soviet empire together, and encouraged his fellow Communist leaders in the East to do the same.
Of course he failed. Socialism isn’t really humanistic after all, but subhumanist. It gets the human species wrong, and even our phylum, mistaking our mammalian kind for some kind of social insect, like a termite. (Just so, secular libertarians propose a political system perfectly suited for lizards who breed by hooking up briefly and randomly, then abandon their eggs in the sand.)
He Wouldn’t Punish His People
Many, many political leaders over millennia have dared greatly and failed, pointed their nations to dreams that turned out to be mere fantasies. Typically, such leaders prodigally poured out the lives of their helpless subjects, in vast schemes of conquest or impossible reforms. When their programs failed, they stormed at and punished their citizens for “failing” them, for not living up to the grandeur of their visions.
So Hitler in his bunker cursed the Germans for proving “unworthy” of him, and Mao at the hapless Chinese who insisted on starving to death in their tens of millions. So did Hillary Clinton and her party, who raged that the American people stabbed them in the back with their votes in 2016.
From the Brink of Nuclear War to Peace Talks with Reagan
Not Gorbachev. He doggedly tried to implement his new, impossible “socialism with a human face,” and mostly resisted the massive pressure of the men all around him to resort to deadly force when it kept failing. He emerged from a Soviet elite so angst-ridden and panicky that it came within a hairsbreadth of launching a pre-emptive nuclear strike in 1983 that would have killed hundreds of millions — you and me included. (See the sobering history book 1983: Reagan, Andropov, and a World on the Brink to see how close we came.)
But Gorbachev, attaining power, was willing to negotiate honestly with the same President Reagan, pulling both powers back from their previous war footing, and seeking genuine arms control and a lasting peace.
He Wouldn’t Send in the Tanks
In 1989, when Communist governments started collapsing all over Europe, Gorbachev could have sent in his troops. In fact, millions of Russians today still think he should have, for the sake of preserving not Communism, but Russian power. But Gorbachev wouldn’t. Against his wishes and in the ruins of his own socialist dreams, he allowed the people of East Germany to answer Reagan’s call and “tear down this Wall!”
Again in 1991, after a coup attempt by hardline Communists that almost claimed his life, Gorbachev again did not use what power he still had to crush his enemies, such as Boris Yeltsin. In a series of moves that got him widely despised by Russians as a weakling, he permitted the Soviet system to vote itself out of existence. Then went on to a life of relative obscurity, his conscience clean.

Contrast that with how the rulers of China behaved in 1989, when democracy protests swept their country. They crushed it with tanks and drowned it in blood. Perversely, that seemed to win the respect of Western leaders, who went right on doing business as usual with their regime.
We Took Full, Ruthless Advantage of Russian Weakness
Toward Russia, our leaders behaved like Machiavellian strategists. We took full advantage of Russia’s collapse to violate our promises, and push our NATO alliance right up to its borders — as if the Russians were some conquered, rum-soaked tribe of American Indians whose hunting grounds we coveted. Western advisors like Jeffrey Sachs flew over to Russia, and help set up a system that let old Communist apparatchiks steal most of the country’s wealth. We crowed about our “unipolar” moment of unchallenged American power, even as Russians saw their life expectancies plummet, and China rearmed much faster than Hitler in the 30s.
Joe Biden, Our Putin
Today, our own oligarchy is clinging to power much more ruthlessly than Gorbachev ever did. The Biden regime, unlike Gorbachev’s, is holding political purge trials and raiding opponents’ homes. Instead of releasing political prisoners as Gorbachev did, Biden is collecting more of them. He’s going on TV denouncing his rivals as “fascists,” sounding for all the world like a North Korean propaganda broadcast.
Perversely, we might see Biden as the mirror image, anti-Gorbachev. One came up in a system of tyranny and injustice, rose to power honestly, then peacefully dismantled it. The other clawed his way to the top of a once-just, once-free system, and is leading its transformation into a failing one-party state. As I found myself observing, when I first heard the news of his passing:
Prayers please for Gorbachev, and for America’s delivery from a new evil empire.

Born of This Land: My Life Story is an English translation of the Chung Ju-yung’s autobiography. Chung ju-yung is the founding chairman of the Hyundai Group. The story begins with the escape from his home to the beginning of Chung’s first auto repair shop. Chung’s personal account of the construction of Soyang River Dam and the Seoul-Busan Expressway, establishment of Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Heavy Industries, and Seosan Reclamation Project are included in the book. Through Chung’s account, we will gain a deeply personal insight into the man who contributed to the Miracle on the Han River.
 
About the Author
Chung Ju-yung(1915.11.25~2001.03.21) is the founder of Hyundai, which included the global consumer brand Hyundai Motor Company, one of the world’s foremost shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries, and a large number of other affiliates. Born on November 25, 1915 in Tongcheon County, Gangwon Province, in what is now North Korea, Chung ran several small businesses prior to Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonialism in 1945. In 1946, he founded the Hyundai Motor Service Center, and the next year Hyundai Construction Company. These two businesses would blossom into the bedrock of one of Korea’s industrial titans.
Chung presided over the Hyundai group during South Korea’s rise from being one of the world’s poorest nations to now one of its richest. Aside from his many achievements in the world of business, he also helped secure the 1988 Olympics for Seoul and sought to improve relations with North Korea through public diplomacy.

Donald Trump is the biggest threat that the ruling class has ever faced and now they're coming after him to get to you. The espionage act cannot be applied to a President and was never even intended to be applied to a former president, and to do so would be unconstitutional. Woodrow Wilson threatened newspapers that challenged his views and used the Espionage Act to jail opponents. President Biden signed the putrid, massive spending bill known as the Inflation Reduction Act which will not ease inflation but add to it. This fractures the connection between the individual citizen and their government in a way that empowers the bureaucrats and weakens the people. This bill will add to the deficit and further hurt the struggling U.S energy industry. Biden will subsidize illegal immigration, the industry-crushing Green New Deal, and pitch this bill as a win for Democrats and a detriment for Republicans that voted against it. The CDC received a blistering report regarding its handling of COVID and it was determined that it fell short of expectations and will be shaking things up. Contrary to what it sounds like the CDC will likely shake things up to make things more political while instituting additional woke policies. The FBI wants to keep the Trump affidavit sealed because the FBI may have spies inside Mar-A-Lago. Merrick Garland was apparently unsure what to do even though they suspected the destruction of documents, so he waited a couple of weeks before he authorized the raid. From the low-level conflicted Magistrate Judge to the politicized prosecutors, the whole thing stinks of a political witch hunt. AG Garland and others must be investigated and exposed for treating America like the Soviet Union.

The FBI is dissolving before our eyes into a rogue security service akin to those in Eastern Europe during the Cold War.
Take the FBI’s deliberately asymmetrical application of the law. This week the bureau surprise-raided the home of former President Donald Trump — an historical first.
A massive phalanx of FBI agents swooped into the Trump residence while he was not home, to confiscate his personal property, safe, and records. All of this was over an archival dispute of presidential papers common to many former presidents. Agents swarmed the entire house, including the wardrobe closet of the former first lady.
Note we are less than 90 days out from a midterm election, and this was not just a raid, but a political act.
The Democratic Party is anticipated to suffer historical losses. Trump was on the verge of announcing his 2024 presidential candidacy. In many polls, he remains the Republican front-runner for the nomination — and well ahead of incumbent President Joe Biden in a putative 2024 rematch.
In 2016 then FBI Director James Comey announced that candidate Hillary Clinton was guilty of destroying subpoenaed emails — a likely felony pertaining to her tenure as secretary of state. Yet he all but pledged that she would not be prosecuted given her status as a presidential candidate.
As far as targeting presidential candidates, Trump was impeached in 2020 ostensibly for delaying military aid to Ukraine by asking Ukrainian officials to investigate more fully the clearly corrupt Biden family — given Joe Biden at the time was a likely possible presidential opponent in 2020.
The FBI has devolved into a personal retrieval service for the incorrigible Biden family. It suppressed, for political purposes, information surrounding Hunter Biden’s missing laptop on the eve of the 2020 election.
Previously, the FBI never pursued Hunter’s fraudulently registered firearm, his mysterious foreign income, his felonious crack cocaine use, or his regular employment of foreign prostitutes.
Yet in a pre-dawn raid just before the 2020 election, the FBI targeted the home of journalist James O’Keefe on grounds that someone had passed to him the lost and lurid diary of Ashley Biden, Biden’s wayward daughter.
At various times, in Stasi-style the FBI has publicly shackled Trump economic advisor Peter Navarro, swarmed the office of Trump’s legal counsel Rudy Giuliani, and sent a SWAT team to surround the house of Trump ally Roger Stone. Meanwhile, terrorists and cartels walk with impunity across an open border.
FBI Director Christopher Wray last week cut short his evasive testimony before Congress. He claimed he had to leave for a critical appointment — only to use his FBI Gulfstream luxury jet to fly to his favorite vacation spot in the Adirondacks.
Wray took over from disgraced interim FBI Director Andrew McCabe. The latter admitted lying repeatedly to federal investigators and signed off on a fraudulent FBI FISA application. He faced zero legal consequences.
McCabe, remember, was also the point man in the softball Hillary Clinton email investigation — while his wife was a political candidate and recipient of thousands of dollars from a political action committee with close ties to the Clinton family.
McCabe took over from disgraced FBI Director James Comey. On 245 occasions, Comey claimed under oath before the House Intelligence Committee that he had no memory or knowledge of key questions concerning his tenure. With impunity, he leaked confidential FBI memos to the media.
Comey took over from Director Robert Mueller. Implausibly, Mueller swore under oath that he had no knowledge, either of the Steele dossier or of Fusion GPS, the firm that commissioned Christopher Steele to compile the dossier. But those were the very twin catalysts that had prompted his entire special investigation into the Russian collusion hoax.
FBI legal counsel Kevin Clinesmith was convicted of a felony for altering an FBI warrant request to spy on an innocent Carter Page.
The FBI, by Comey’s own public boasts, bragged how it caught National Security Advisor designate General Michael Flynn in its Crossfire Hurricane Russian collusion hoax.
As special counsel, Mueller then fired two of his top investigators — Lisa Page and Peter Strzok — for improper personal and professional behavior. He then staggered their releases to mask their collaborative wrongdoing.
Mueller’s team deleted critical cell phone evidence under subpoena that might well have revealed systemic FBI-related bias.
The FBI interferes with and warps national elections. It hires complete frauds as informants who are far worse than its targets. It humiliates or exempts government and elected officials based on their politics. It violates the civil liberties of individual American citizens.
The FBI’s highest officials now routinely mislead Congress. They have erased or altered court and subpoenaed evidence. They illegally leak confidential material to the media. And they have lied under oath to federal investigators.
The agency has become dangerous to Americans and an existential threat to their democracy and rule of law. The FBI should be dispersing its investigatory responsibilities to other government investigative agencies that have not yet lost the public’s trust.
