Why Is Rent So High?

The Heritage Foundation

Plenty of millennials seem convinced that greedy landlords are to blame for rising housing costs — and that the key to fixing this ”issue“ lies in government involvement. Lawmakers in Oregon must feel the same way. With the signing of Senate Bill 608, their state just became the first to pass a statewide, rent control bill. But is government intervention a viable solution, or is that simply myth? Could going down that road actually create more problems than solutions? While it's no secret that rent can be tough to afford — for many, it means tightening their monthly budgets at the least — could the problem simply be a result of low supply and high demand rather than a, ”grand conspiracy of greedy landlords”? This week, Tiffany Roberts sits down with Joel Griffith, a research fellow in Heritage’s Roe Institute for Economic Freedom, to discuss these high rental costs, rent control, and much more.
