I started hunting when I was eight years old. I've hunted on different continents and all across the United States. Hunters pay billions to protect the environment from destructive human development. Hunters are the world's greatest environmentalists. The purchase of tags and licenses are necessary documents obtained to ensure your hunt is legal and that the wildlife habitat is preserved. In 2017 36.82 million tags, stamps and hunting licenses were bought in the United States. The money that hunters generate brings in over 1.6 billion in the United States per year. Preservation is extremely important because the area for wildlife to live free in America is rapidly shrinking. The human footprint in the continental United States grew by more than 24 million acres from 2001 to 2017. That's equivalent to the loss of roughly a football field worth of natural area every 30 seconds. Hunters are doggedly devoted to preserving the environment and saving those natural areas. Responsible hunting leads to more wildlife, not less. In Africa, old bulls will fight off the younger ones for mates. However, the older bulls can't always reproduce. This makes the herd stagnant in numbers. Hunting older animals gives opportunity for the younger in the herd to reproduce and have access to food and habitat. If done correctly, hunting actually ensures the longevity of an animal population. Overpopulation of a species can have a devastating effect on the species itself. Having too many animals possesses many problems, such as a shortage in food, disease, fighting and starvation for the animal species. Overpopulation of deer, elk and moose have led to 1.5 million deer versus car collisions annually in the United States. Responsible hunters help keep out of control local wildlife populations in check, leading to a better life for the animals. Finally, hunters are crucial in the research to keep animals alive and thriving. President Theodore Roosevelt said, "The people who protest against all hunting and consider sportsmen as enemies of wildlife are ignorant of the fact that in reality the genuine sportsman is by all odds the most important factor in keeping the larger and more valuable wild creatures from total extermination." Hillsdale College
Victor Davis Hanson, the Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College, is also a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and a professor of classics emeritus at California State University, Fresno. He earned his B.A. at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and his Ph.D. in classics from Stanford University. In 2007, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal, and in 2008, he received the Bradley Prize from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation. He has written for numerous publications, including the Claremont Review of Books, The New Criterion, and The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of several books, including A War Like No Other: How the Athenians and Spartans Fought the Peloponnesian War and The Second World Wars: How the First Global Conflict Was Fought and Won. Xenophon wrote that a successful general “must be resourceful, active, careful, hardy, and quick-witted; he must be both gentle and brutal, at once straightforward and designing, capable of both caution and surprise, lavish and rapacious, generous and mean, skillful in defense and attack.” This third CCA of the 2019-2020 academic year will consider the lives and characters of some of America’s greatest generals.

Introduction to the Constitution—Available Now!
This twelve-lesson course explains the principles underlying the American founding as set forth in the Declaration of Independence and secured by the Constitution. The Founders believed that the principles in these documents were not simply preferences for their own day, but were truths that the sovereign and moral people of America could always rely on as guides in their pursuit of happiness through ordered liberty.
Theology 101: The Western Theological Tradition
The Western theological tradition stretches back thousands of years to the time of the ancient Hebrews. This tradition has had a profound impact on the development of Western Civilization as a whole. This course will consider the origins and development of Western religious theology from the Old Testament through the twentieth century.
American Heritage—From Colonial Settlement to the Current Day
On July 4, 1776, America—acting under the authority of “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God”—declared its independence from Great Britain. The new nation, founded on the principle that “all Men are created equal,” eventually grew to become the most prosperous and powerful nation in the world. This course will consider the history of America from the colonial era to the present, including major challenges to the Founders’ principles.
The U.S. Supreme Court
Article III of the U.S. Constitution vests the judicial power “in one supreme Court, and in such inferior Courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish.” According to Federalist 78, the judicial branch “will always be the least dangerous” to the liberty of the American people. Yet, judicial decisions have done much to advance a Progressive agenda that poses a fundamental threat to liberty. This course will consider several landmark Supreme Court cases in relation to the Founders’ Constitution.
Shakespeare: Hamlet and The Tempest
One of the world’s greatest poets, William Shakespeare is the author of plays that have been read and performed for more than 400 years. A close study of his works reveals timeless lessons about human nature, which offer a mirror for examining one’s own character. In Hamlet and The Tempest, Shakespeare considers those virtues and vices that make self-government and statesmanship possible or impossible to achieve.
Public Policy from a Constitutional Viewpoint
The American Founders wrote a Constitution that established a government limited in size and scope, whose central purpose was to secure the natural rights of all Americans. By contrast, early Progressives rejected the notion of fixed limits on government, and their political descendants continue today to seek an ever-larger role for the federal bureaucracy in American life. In light of this fundamental and ongoing disagreement over the purpose of government, this course will consider contemporary public policy issues from a constitutional viewpoint.
Athens and Sparta
A study of the ancient Greek cities of Athens and Sparta is essential for understanding the beginning of the story of Western Civilization. Moreover, such a study reveals timeless truths about the human condition that are applicable in any age. This course will consider life and government in Athens and Sparta, examine their respective roles in the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, and offer some conclusions regarding their continuing relevance.
An Introduction to C.S. Lewis: Writings and Significance
C.S. Lewis was the greatest Christian apologist of the twentieth century. He was also the author of works of fiction, including the Chronicles of Narnia, and of philosophy, including The Abolition of Man. This course will consider Lewis’s apologetics and his fiction, as well as his philosophical and literary writings, and their continuing significance today.
Winston Churchill and Statesmanship
Winston Churchill was the greatest statesman of the 20th century, and one of the greatest in all of history. From a young age, Churchill understood the unique dangers of modern warfare, and he worked to respond to them. Though best known for his leadership during World War II, he was also a great defender of constitutionalism. A close study of Churchill’s words and deeds offers timeless lessons about the virtues, especially prudence, required for great statesmanship.
The Federalist Papers
Written between October 1787 and August 1788, The Federalist Papers is a collection of newspaper essays written in defense of the Constitution. Writing under the penname Publius, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay explain the merits of the proposed Constitution, while confronting objections raised by its opponents. Thomas Jefferson described the work as “the best commentary on the principles of government, which ever was written.” This course will explore major themes of The Federalist Papers, such as the problem of majority faction, separation of powers, and the three branches of government.
A Proper Understanding of K-12 Education: Theory and Practice
The American Founders recognized the central importance of education for the inculcation of the kind of knowledge and character that is essential to the maintenance of free government. For example, the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 states, “Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.” This course will consider the older understanding of the purpose of education, the more recent Progressive approach that has become dominant today, and some essential elements of K-12 education.
The Presidency and the Constitution
This free, 10-week, not-for-credit course, taught by the Hillsdale College politics faculty, will help you understand the structure and function of executive power in the American constitutional order. The course begins with the place of the president in the constitutionalism of the Founding Fathers and examines how that role has changed with the rise of the modern Progressive administrative state.
Great Books 102: Renaissance to Modern
This 11-week, not-for-credit course, taught by Hillsdale College faculty, will introduce you to great books from the Renaissance through the modern era. You will explore the writings of Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, Austen, Twain, and more. This course will challenge you to seek timeless lessons regarding human nature, virtue, self-government, and liberty in the pages of the great books.

Stringent government control and oppressive social media platforms are forcing Australians to self-censor themselves, according to controversial media personality Katie Hopkins. Ms Hopkins, who is known for her strident support of Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, says social media giants like Twitter and Facebook often punish those whose views fall out of the mainstream. She told Sky News freedom of speech, which was once the bedrock of democracy, "no longer exists" in many western nations. "Frankly, no one would defend freedom of speech to their death because we (Australia and the UK) don't have it anymore," she said. "Good Australians that I know and I love, they self-censor everywhere they go because they can no longer speak about how they think or how they feel. "It's the mechanism of control."

Both were enrolled in public schools. Both had come to the U.S. in the past several years from Central America. This is a fresh section on sexual morality that Lewis added to a reprint of his famous BBC addresses to bring in points which he had not time to deal with in the actual talks. Notes below. This became Chapter 5 of Book 3, in the book called ‘Mere Christianity'. You can find the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Mere-Christiani... (0:32) Lewis would later marry in 1957 – incidentally he married a divorcee, who had legitimate reasons for a righteous divorce. He wrote 'The Four Loves' after his marriage, which is highly recommended reading also. (8:10) Patriotism. Lewis: "Ordinary morality tells us, ceteris paribus [all other things being equal], to love our kindred and fellow citizens more than strangers." A racialist ethic is achieved by isolating one part of this maxim to the exclusion of the other, so that no claims except those of blood are acknowledged (i.e. blood ties or loyalty to family are everything, and the rights of strangers is ignored). A socialist ethic is achieved by selecting the other part of the maxim, so that duties to children and citizens are destroyed for 'the good of humanity'. Scriptures like 1 Timothy 5:8 are ignored. It was disillusionment with this error that was one of the steps that led Joy Lewis to convert to Christianity: "I began to notice what neglected, neurotic waifs the children of Communists were and to question the genuineness of the love of mankind that didn't begin at home.” (10:56) The original booklet contained a shorter passage which was re-written and extended in the book, ‘Mere Christianity’, but it also contained some other ideas which are beneficial to consider as well – the idea that falling in love may not be a good enough reason for a Christian to get married in the first place. Lewis: “People...often say, 'Surely love is the important thing in marriage.' In a sense, yes. Love is the important thing – perhaps the only important thing – in the whole universe. But it depends what you mean by “Love”. What most people mean by Love, when they are talking about marriage, is what is called “being in love". Now “being in love” may be a good reason for getting married, though, as far as I can see, it is not a perfect one, for you can fall in love with someone most unsuitable, and even with someone you don’t really (in a deeper sense) LIKE or trust. But being in love is not the deeper unity which makes man and wife one organism. I am told (indeed I can see by looking round me) that being in love doesn’t last. I don’t think it was ever intended to. I think it’s a sort of explosion that starts up the engine; it’s the pie-crust, not the pie. The real thing, I understand, is something far deeper — something you can live on. I think you can be madly in love with someone you would be sick of after ten weeks: and I’m pretty sure you can be bound heart and soul to someone about whom you don’t at the moment feel excited, any more than you feel excited about yourself.” (18:25) In the Bible man only began to “rule” (Genesis 3.16) over his wife as a result and punishment of the fall. Before that, man was head of his wife, but not her master. In a similar way, Israel's Judges were shepherds or heads over Israel, but not her Kings. See Judges 8.23 where God’s Judge, Gideon, utterly rejects that position: “I shall not rule over you, and not shall my son rule over you; the LORD shall rule over you!”. The people’s rejection of God as Master, and their wicked demand for a human master in 1 Samuel 8.7 and 1 Samuel 12.17 is shown to be an inferior position from the original. Being 'head' of a woman did not mean that she could not defy a wicked husband (see Abigail's famous defiance of her wicked husband Nabal’s wishes and it was righteous - 1 Sam 25), nor did it mean that a husband would not have to obey his wife on righteous occasions when she knew the will of the Lord better than he ("Obey your wife in all that she says” - Genesis 21.12). Abigail, in fact, performed the role of a righteous wife and classic helpmate for David in saving him from the disaster of avenging himself. (0:05) This radio talk was given in February 1942 during some of Britain's darkest days in WWII, with major cities having experienced a series of bombing blitzes and about to experience more. The Axis powers were at the zenith of their power. Step up to the microphone, C.S. Lewis... (This radio talk was the first to be heard by the American G.I.’s who arrived in Britain the week before). Many people tried to run their cars on alternatives to petrol – using different alcohols – and this inevitably failed as the engines overheated. (8:03) In English folklore, John Barleycorn is a character who represents the crop of barley harvested each autumn. The character grew healthy and hale during the summer, was chopped down and slaughtered in his prime, and then processed into beer and whiskey so he lived once more. This ‘dying god' myth, copied into folklore from the patterns of nature, Lewis actually led C.S. Lewis to Christ - nature's Creator, as he explains here: https://youtu.be/Uv4kx2QP4UM?t=3m59s (8:47) See John 10.30, John 8.58, Matt 9:2, and Mark 14:62. Take a read of these chapters to see Jesus confronting hostile crowds, seeking to execute Him. (12:13) This shortened version of the argument “Liar, Lunatic or Lord” included another two non-Christian hypotheses, “Exaggeration or Legend”, in Lewis' other writings. This armchair-psychologist's argument (that gospel writers were lunatics) and this literary non-scholar's argument (that the gospels were just novelettes) are usually based on unthinking atheistic assumptions that the existence of God or the miraculous is impossible based on "one of the sciences". Based on these assumptions, Jesus’ shocking acts or statements can not be true, and therefore some way, however implausible, is sought to remove or discredit the offending sayings and acts. However, these are not strong arguments in themselves without the false assumption fueling them. Once the unthinking atheistic assumptions are dealt with, these two less likely possibilities can be addressed.
